Lis on the way to her first Kona victory and 40-44 course record

We competed in our first triathlon in 1992, and have competed in hundreds of races since – everything from sprints to the big one in Hawaii. Lisbeth has competed as an elite amateur from the beginning, and has been Ironman World Champion 5 times: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2016 (she chose not to compete in 2014, but did podium at 70.3 Worlds, and placed 2nd in 2015 and 2017). She held the Kona course record for 40-44 and 45-49. She has also placed 6th (1995) and a 4th (2005) at International distance Worlds and a 5th and 6th at Ironman Hawaii (2008 and 1996 – our honeymoon!).

Other results include a 3rd place at the Norseman Extreme

Norseman Extreme 2012

in 2012, overall amateur victories at Rev3 70.3 (2011, 2009) and Patriot 70.3 (2009-2011), 3rd overall amateur at Ironman Arizona 2008 (setting a new age group course record), and overall amateur winner at Ironman Florida 2007, breaking the course record and setting the fastest Ironman time by an amateur WORLDWIDE in 2007. She also had the fastest bike split at 4:59 and second fastest run. We like to think her great bike position helped a lot! She has been ranked #1 or #2 nationally in her age group almost every year she has competed actively (she missed a few years to have our 3 children). Todd initially competed as a Clydesdale and progressed to elite amateur in the mid 90s. As an age grouper he has been ranked as an All American several times.

Educated as engineers with graduate science degrees, we have both been fascinated by the technical aspects of the sport right from the beginning. Biking is the best leg for both of us, and other than our very first entry-level road bikes, Todd has built all of our bikes from the frame up and done all of our fitting. He also did this for many of our friends over the years in Miami, Kentucky, and now Rhode Island. For him this was a hobby, payment was never accepted other than an occasional six-pack.

Along the way he spent a lot of time thinking, reading about, and experimenting with fit. Several years back he developed a method for using motion analysis software to optimize fit. Again, this was mainly for our own benefit but he began fitting many of our friends as well (as long as they weren’t in our age groups!).

In 2009 Todd began developing his own fit simulator (“fit bike”) because nothing on the market had the features he needed for optimal fitting. A few years and one utility patent later, the Vertex Fit Cycle was born, and it continues to be a cornerstone of our fit process.

If  you live within a reasonable distance of the Providence Rhode Island area, we welcome you to visit us for an in-person fit at 337 Water St, Warren, RI 02885. We usually schedule appointments midday during the week or on weekends, although other times can be arranged. Email us to set up an appointment. We can help you choose your next bike or just get dialed in on your current one. If you are having comfort and/or performance issues, we can help.

We look forward to working with you and hope to see you at the races!
